San Giovanni Evangelista is a real gem among all the remnants of Roman and Byzantine mosaic-based art, the historical city of Ravenna possess. This is a Catholic church built in the 5th century by the Romanian emperor Galla Placidia. However, it went through a process of artistic renovation with Gothic touch in the 14th century and today this historical monument bears the sign of it with pride. The west facade has an inscription of the long arched porch which was partly destroyed in Second World War. The monument has two massive bells cast in a square compile of 139-foot height.

The central nave is well maintained by the staff and its spacious and bright look will mesmerize any visitor at the first glance. During the bombing of 1994, these portions were partly destroyed, but later it was repaired and renovated in such perfection that today one can hardly detect any sign of it. The building is situated in a marshy land which is subjected to gradual submerging into water. The base of San Giovanni Evangelista was raised periodically through the centuries and today it is standing five feet higher than its original position. Instead of this, the Byzantine art of the columns is still intact.

You can find a lot of amazing and beautiful churches while you visiting Ravenna, but if you have to choose one, we highly recommend to go to San Vitale.
